At the very beginning of the 20th century, it was here, at the Commandant hippodrome (later the Commandant airfield), where Russian aviation was born.

Matsievich Lev Makarovich
Matsievich Lev Makarovich - engineer, aviator, one of the first Russian pilots, captain of the Russian army.

September 24 (October 7) 1910 Matsievich performed with demonstration flights in St. Petersburg at the All-Russian festival of aeronautics. On this day, he made several flights in his "Farman", drove senior officers, influential persons. Before the last flight of Matsievich, the adjutant of the chief of Russian aviation, Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich, conveyed a wish to show some kind of aviation achievement. Matsievich decided to take off by plane to the highest possible height. At exactly 6 pm, his plane began to fall apart in the air in front of the shocked spectators.

Kotelnikov Gleb Sergeevich
Kotelnikov Gleb Sergeevich is the inventor of the world's first aviation knapsack parachute. Kotelnikov was among the spectators and, like the rest of St. Petersburg, was shocked by the death of Matsievicha, and was determined to come up with some device to save the lives of aviators in case of aircraft breakdowns ... The development of the first version of the parachute took 10 months and was crowned with complete success. According to legend, Gleb Sergeevich came up with a design option while watching a performance in Mariinsky Theater. Some young lady dropped her handkerchief, and it dawned on Kotelnikov, who was watching him plan from the top rows.

Memorial plaque at the site of Matsievich's death. Actually, this is a bit of a wrong place.

his inconspicuous boulder on the other side of Bogatyrskoye is exactly the place of Matsievich's death
This inconspicuous boulder on the other side of Bogatyrskoye is exactly the place where the aviator died. There is a reason why there is a red carnation on it.

A stand with the history of the Commandant airfield
A stand with the history of the Commandant airfield. There are several such stands, they tell both the history of the airfield and the biographies of the first pilots, about the tests here of Sikorsky aircraft (Grand and Ilya Muromets bombers, C-XVI fighter).

In the northern part of the park there is a playground and it is also about early aviation:

Children's playground a la heavy bomber designed by Sikorsky "Ilya Muromets". It is wildly popular with children due to the presence of a cabin.

So the park was landscaped quite recently, in 2019. Well, the place where the airfield was built up for a long time and now the names of streets and avenues of the Primorsky District remind of this, most of which are directly related to aviation - Bogatyrsky Prospect, Serebristy Boulevard, Aviakonstruktorov Street, Komendantsky Prospect and the metro station of the same name.

Whoever, without Google, will guess why Bogatyrsky and Serebristy, how it is connected with aviation - that is butterscotch. True, it's not a fact that Google knows the answer.
