Initial name of the largest island in delta Neva was Birch. Nowadays this general name for several islands. Under protection of two fortresses — Kronverk and St.-Petersburg — began to lodge the first townsmen. After construction of the Summer palace of Peter I, Admiralties, houses actively are under construction on opposite coast Neva, and the Petrograd island for century «is forgotten». The second coil of active settling of island is necessary on second half of XIX-th century, till this time here there were mainly nobility manors.
