rostral columns

Two rostral columns symmetrically standing on Spit of Vasilievsky Island — allegory to the similar columns put in Ancient Rome in honour of victories in sea battles. Columns symbolise the won battles by Russian fleet on Baltic in Northern war. In the architectural plan, their symmetric arrangement finishes harmonous ensemble Arrows of Vasilevsky island, underlining severity of the Stock exchange and Warehouses. Columns are one of the most recognised symbols St.-Petersburg. Outwardly it is two red colours of the column which has been set up on white marble of the basis. At bottom allegorical sculptures from пудожского a stone of the most significant on the European part of Russia of the river — Volga, Dnepr, Volkhov and, certainly, Neva sit. (The author is unknown) are executed by master-mason S.K.Sukhanov. In holidays, fired on them fires announce the culmination of celebrations.
